Nottinghamshire Police clearly define homophobic and transphobic incidents as "any incident that is perceived to be homophobic or transphobic by the victim or any other person". Some incidents can be seen as homophobic or transphobic by everyone, although there are some less visible incidents that may involve being unfairly treated in your studies. Any homophobic or transphobic discrimination or harassment of LGBT people is a crime.
Nottingham Trent University and the Nottingham Trent Students Union each have an Equal Opportunities policy that protects its students from unfair treatment or discrimination on the grounds of their sex, sexuality or gender identity (among many other things). NTU and Nottingham itself are very diverse and so homophobic incidents are usually very rare.
However if you are the victim of homophobia, transphobia, discrimination, harassment or unfair treatment because of your sex, sexuality or gender identity, you need to report it as soon as possible! You can report it to the NTU Pride Society, who can deal with it for you. As the representatives of LGBT students at Nottingham Trent University, we are in a position to take your complaints to the appropriate people in NTU or NTSU to help resolve the issue quickly and discreetly for you, or if necessary by submitting a hate crime report to the Nottinghamshire Police for you.
What to do if you are the victim of discrimination or unfair treatment
To report a homophobic or transphobic incident to the Society you can use the Hate Crime Reporting Form. Completing this form will allow us to take your complaints further and help you resolve the problem.
How To Report a Hate Crime
There are a number of ways to report a hate crime. The first way is through NTU Pride: You can download and print a copy of the form to complete (can be returned to Union Central or any department of the Nottinghamshire Police). If you give us permission to do so, we can also work with the Police on the incident, and provide you with support if you request it. The second way is by reporting the crime directly to the Police. For all serious crimes, such as ones that involve violence, you are advised to contact the Police as soon as possible. The Police have specially trained officers who can deal with and support you through LGBT-related crimes.
To contact Nottinghamshire Police directly you can call the following numbers:
City: (0115) 948 2999,
Clifton: (0115) 948 2999,
Brackenhurst: (0190) 950 0999.
In an emergency you should always dial 999.
