Welcome to the NTU Pride Hate Crime Reporting Centre. NTU Pride has worked together with Nottinghamshire Police to create Nottingham Trent Students Union's first hate crime reporting centre. Any incident reported through this centre can be investigated by NTU Pride and Nottinghamshire Police, helping to give you the answers you want and providing you with access to all the support that you may need.

If you have or think you may have been a victim of hate crime, this is where you can find more information and, if you wish report it to NTU Pride. To report a hate crime (of any description, not only LGBT), complete the online Self-reporting Form
, or pick one up from a Pridebox and return it to Union Central on your campus.

Hate Crime Facts

What is Hate Crime?
Hatred is a strong term that goes beyond simply causing offence or hostility. Hate crime is any criminal offence committed against a person or property that is motivated by an offender's hatred of someone because of their:
- race, colour, ethnic origin, nationality or national origins
- religion
- gender or gender identity
- sexual orientation
- disability

Hate crime can take many forms including:
- physical attacks – such as physical assault, damage to property, offensive graffiti, neighbour disputes and arson
- threat of attack – including offensive letters, abusive or obscene telephone calls, groups hanging around to intimidate and - unfounded, malicious complaints
- verbal abuse or insults - offensive leaflets and posters, abusive gestures, dumping of rubbish outside homes or through letterboxes, and bullying at school or in the workplace

The Home Office definition of a hate crime:
Any incident, which constitutes a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person as being motivated by prejudice or hate.

Why report it?
You can report any incident where you or anyone else has been targeted because they or you are believed to be of a different social group including, race, sexuality, gender identity etc. You can also report domestic abuse involving anyone which you have a close relationship to, eg, your current or previous partner. By reporting a hate crime as either the victim, witness, parent, carer or other concerned person, you will be enabling the police and partnership agencies such as NTU Pride to build up patterns of behaviour, highlight areas of concern and help protect your community from similar incidents happening in the future. With full details of an incident, the report can be investigated fully and you can get the service and support you need. Without these details, the incident report will only be used for monitoring purposes.

Crown Prosecution Service Policy
For prosecuting cases with a homophobic or transphobic element - excerpt from 'True Vision' pack 2007.
Is there enough evidence to prosecute? A victim who is the only witness to a homophobic or transphobic incident resulting in a prosecuting will usually be required to give evidence in court unless the defendant pleads guilty.
The CPS recognises that some victims will find this very difficult and will actively consider what other evidence may be available, either to support the victims evidence or as an alternative.
They will consider what special measures might be available to vulnerable or intimidated victims or witnesses who are required to give evidence in order to make their experience less difficult. Special measures may also include the use of screens in court to shield the witness from the defendant, giving evidence by video recording or live TV link, or by giving evidence in private in sexual cases or cases of witness intimidation.

How To Report a Hate Crime
There are a number of ways to report a hate crime. The first way is through NTU Pride - you can complete the online self reporting form, or pick up a printed version from any of the Prideboxes on each campus, complete and seal it and return it to Union Central. These forms are picked up by NTU Pride committee members and investigated, if you give your consent, we can also work with the police on the particular incident, and also to provide you with support if you request it.
You can also report a crime directly to the police. There are specially trained police officers in the area who can deal with your report and support you through it. The Nottingham Central Police Station number is 0115 9482999. In an emergency, you should always dial 999.
